Established in 1992 by a group of individuals as a community-driven initiative to facilitate affordable homes for its members, Happy People Housing Cooperative (HPHC) is a specialized cooperative and the first of its kind in Nigeria. Based on the affordable housing principles outlined by the visionary Ladi Oluwarore, it was registered with the Government of Oyo State, Nigeria, in 1994.
The foundation-laying ceremony of its first housing estate was performed in the same year by the then Military Governor of Oyo State, His Excellency, Col. Ike Nwosu. The Cooperative Housing Estate has since grown into a vibrant community, spreading development to adjacent areas in Apete, Ibadan. It has become an inspiration for many other organizations and development initiatives across Nigeria.
HPHC has continued to operate under its key distinguishing characteristics, which generate a propulsive and transformative socio-economic atmosphere wherever they are applied. Happy People Cooperative Housing Estate, with these underlying principles, has evolved into a model for other like-minded groups to emulate and thrive physically, socially, and economically.
